Traffic Stop in Brick Leads to Arrest for Drug and Weapon Charges
According to Brick Township Police on Wednesday, a man is being charged with both drug and weapons after cocaine and a defaced handgun were found during a motor vehicle stop.
According to a news release from Police Chief David Forrester, Kayshon D. Johnson was taken into custody on January 8 along with his passengers, Lakewood resident Raul Mendez Cervantes Jr. and an unnamed minor.
According to the chief, a car that was acting strangely near Lanes Mill Road was spotted by officers in the Street Crimes Unit, which then pursued and stopped it in Lakewood for several moving infractions.
A loaded, vandalized vehicle, 39 grams of crack cocaine, and a small amount of soft cocaine were found during a search of the vehicle conducted with the help of the Ocean County Sheriff's K-9 Unit.
He claimed to have a 40 caliber Ruger handgun with its serial number scratched off.
According to him, officers also found other pieces of evidence, such as several blank prescription ledgers, a digital scale for weighing drugs, and another loaded magazine in the glove compartment.
Following their arrest, Johnson and Cervantes were brought to the Brick Police Department for processing and booking before being transported to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River. According to the chief, Johnson is accused of numerous traffic infractions, including distribution of controlled dangerous substances, two counts of possession of controlled dangerous substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a defaced firearm, endangering the welfare of a minor, and possession of a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance.
Cervantes was taken into custody in relation to a number of pending warrants from various jurisdictions.
Forrester stated, "This incident demonstrates the Brick Township Police Department's and its law enforcement partners' continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession in our communities."
