According to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, a father and his girlfriend have been charged with contributing to the death of his daughter, who is four years old.
Givenchy Stewart, 21, of Paterson, the girl's father is accused with obstructing apprehension and putting a child's welfare in jeopardy.
Stewart's girlfriend, Ashanti Givens, 21, of Paterson, was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of endangering a child's welfare, and obstructing apprehension.
Paterson Police received a complaint about an unconscious youngster at an apartment near Pearl and Carroll streets on May 6 just before 9 p.m.
After locating the infant, authorities took her to a neighboring hospital, where she was declared dead later that evening.
According to authorities, Givens and Stewart were found to have left the residence for "substantial amounts of time" on May 5 and May 6. At first, the two were accused of obstructing apprehension and threatening the welfare of a kid.
The four-year-old girl's cause of death was determined by autopsy to be blunt force trauma, and homicide was the manner of death.
According to officials, Givens was charged with homicide and another charge of endangering the welfare of a child when it was determined that he was directly responsible for the girl's death.
On August 6, a grand jury formally charged the couple with their roles in the murder by indicting them.
Givens faces a possible sentence of life in prison if found guilty. If found guilty of his allegations, Stewart could spend up to 15 years in prison.
