Tragic Incident: Baby Suffocated by Drunk Parent in NJ
According to Cape May Prosecutors Office, a mother from Cape May County was sentenced to New Jersey State Prison after she drank several bottles of vodka, fell asleep with her 6-month-old son in her arms, and woke up several hours later to discover him unconscious.
On November 19, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced that 29-year-old Michelle Stanton of the Villas neighborhood of Lower Township had been found guilty of manslaughter and given a four-year sentence.
According to Sutherland, the infant, named "C.C.," was declared deceased on June 25, 2023, shortly after three in the morning.
Stanton had previously dozed off while holding C.C. after consuming 12 to 14 airplane bottles of vodka.
Hours later, she awoke to see C.C. stuck between her bedroom's wall and mattress, unresponsive and unconscious, according to Sutherland.
Following the arrival of Lower Township police, C.C. was transported to
Cape Regional Medical Center, where he was later declared deceased.
According to a press release issued by the Prosecutors Office, on August 20, 2024, Stanton was charged with second degree manslaughter and second degree endangering the welfare of a child.
On September 23, she entered a guilty plea to second degree manslaughter in order to receive a sentence that was one degree less severe, according to Sutherland. Because of the No Early Release Act, she must complete at least 85% of her sentence before being eligible for parole.
