Tragic Shooting Incident: 82 Year-Old Man Accidentally Kills Wife in NJ
According to officials, an 82-year-old Edison man shot and killed his wife by mistake while trying to empty his gun.
Chief Thomas Bryan of the
Edison Police Department and Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said on Monday that the fatal shooting that occurred in the house on Glencourt Avenue on Friday afternoon is currently being investigated.
Robert and Patricia Novak's residence was visited by Edison police shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, following a complaint of an unintentional shooting.
Patricia Novak, 76, was discovered by police to have only one gunshot wound. She was brought to
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Robert Novak, 82, Patricia Novak's husband, was trying to clear one of his registered firearms from the first floor of the house when it went off, according to an early police inquiry.
According to officials, the weapon round entered the basement and wounded his spouse.
There was no information given regarding the kind of weapon used.
When Novak discovered his wife had been shot, he called 911 after hearing her cry and going to check on her, according to the authorities.
Authorities stated that Novak collaborated with investigators during the course of the inquiry.
