Tropical Storm Debby: What New Jersey Residents Should Know
According to the National Weather Service, it is anticipated that Debby will reach New Jersey by the end of this week, resulting in periods of heavy rain and floods.
This rain may have a wind component, but that will depend on how Debby's storm core moves through or closes to the area. Rainfall can currently reach 3-4" within the heaviest rain axis, while its exact location is still being forecast. Although the backside of the storm is dryer and windier, Debby's center is expected to pass over New Jersey at some point on Saturday.
Due to Debby's moisture, everyone in New Jersey should prepare for the possibility of flooding rain on Friday and early Saturday. If the moisture plume travels down the shore rather than inland, coastal effects could be felt.
Debby's precipitation is predicted to affect southern New Jersey on Thursday night, and by Friday afternoon, moderate to heavier rain is predicted to reach Central and North Jersey. It's expected to rain heavily through Saturday morning and quickly improve from the west to the east by midday on Saturday as a front moves through the wet.
The location of the heaviest rain and the precise moment when it will have its greatest impact are both rather unpredictable. Forecasters are aware that the front that brought the moisture to New Jersey will cause hazardous flooding on Tuesday.
It will then take the next two days for the state to absorb some of Debby's moisture before the front moves again toward our area.
As the rain moves back north, forecasters are aware that it will result in flooding, particularly after tonight's rainfall and the anticipated showers for the next few days. Coastal and wind impacts are not significant at this time, but they might develop and become more intense based on where the storm tracks.
