At Rutgers University, the Mariners football team defeated Passaic Tech 28-7 to win the first NJSIAA Group 5 championship in state history.
As New Jersey played to group champions for the first time, Toms River North went 14-0 during the regular season without dropping a contest. Before this season, teams could only compete for sectional titles, which Toms River North has achieved on numerous occasions.
Toms River North, which was held under 40 points in a game for the first time all season, was led by quarterback Micah Ford, who completed passes for 117 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Josh Moore, who scored an 80-yard touchdown.
The Mariners were met at Exit 82 by a large parade of fire engines and police cars that accompanied the team the remainder of the way to the high school as they arrived back from winning the championship.
