Violence Erupts: Three Stabbed During Jersey Shore Memorial Day Weekend
and Many Arrests
As over 100,000 tourists flocked to Seaside Heights for Memorial Day weekend, borough police reported Monday that three people had been stabbed and over 70 people had been arrested.
Detective Steve Korman stated that
Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd closed the boardwalk due to issues on Sunday night.
According to Korman, one of the men arrested was carrying a gun.
Each of the three stabbings occurred during a different event. The first was reported on Saturday at approximately 8 p.m. According to Korman, a 21-year-old man was stabbed in the back on Webster Avenue's Ocean block.
According to him, the individual was assessed by the Tri-Boro First Aid Squad, transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and then airlifted to
Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. According to Korman, the victim received treatment but refused to assist investigators or accept any police assistance.
He claimed the second stabbing occurred at
Sherman Avenue and Ocean Terrace at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Sunday. After being stabbed in the hip, a 22-year-old man was transported by EMS to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. According to Korman, he also declined to assist investigators.
According to Korman, the third stabbing occurred just before Boyd closed the boardwalk. The victim, an 18-year-old man who had been stabbed in the right thigh, refused to cooperate with investigators and was sent by ambulance to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
There was no information available regarding the three men's conditions, and none of them were identified.
Seaside Heights Police were called to a dispute at Grant Avenue and Ocean Terrace approximately an hour after the promenade was closed.
Byron Czaplicki, 21, of Beachwood, was taken into custody by Patrolman James Hans during the altercation.
According to Korman, Czaplicki was charged with firearm possession, resisting arrest, unauthorized weapon possession, and obstruction of justice.
52 adults and 21 minors were among the 73 persons detained by police between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday, according to authorities.
Warnings were issed over the holiday weekend that they would be enforcing stricter rules against misbehavior, particularly for parents.
Tighter curfews and rental regulations have been implemented to discourage parents from renting rooms for teenagers to have unsupervised parties, which have historically been held responsible for disruptive behavior.
Curfew for the surrounding areas have also been implemented.
