With Up To 6 Inches of Snow Expected, New Jersey Has Declared a State of Emergency

Gov. Phil Murphy Declared a Statewide State of Emergency in New Jersey Starting at 10 p.m.

With up to 6 inches of snow expected in New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy issued a state of emergency beginning Thursday at 10 p.m.

Anyone who can work remotely or start later in the day, according to Murphy, should do so. The worst of the storm is expected to hit between 1 and 7 a.m. Friday, with the highest snowfall totals expected in parts of South and Central Jersey.

"The storm's worst hours would be an excellent time to stay home," Murphy added.

Murphy plans to call for a delayed opening to state offices. According to him, a commercial vehicle prohibition will go into place on parts of the state's key interstate highways in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

COVID-19 may lead certain utility employees to be understaffed, according to Murphy.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Monmouth, Salem, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Ocean, Cumberland, and Atlantic counties, all of which are in South or Central Jersey.

From 10 p.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday, the National Weather Service anticipates 3-6 inches of snowfall in this area. Snowfall rates in the region might reach 1 inch per hour late tonight, with snowfall predicted to wind down from west to east by sunrise on Friday at 7:21 a.m.

From midnight to noon Friday, forecasters predict 3-5 inches of snow for parts of North Jersey.
