Surfers and beachgoers rushed to assist a swimmer who was in distress at a Jersey Shore beach Thursday, performing CPR until emergency responders arrived. The 21-year-old man later died.

According to North Wildwood Police, the swimmer was pulled from the water near 2nd and Ocean avenues at about 2 p.m. Thursday. He was identified as Ahmet Yimenici, 21, of Turkey.

Yimenici was transported to Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said signs clearly warn beachgoers that swimming and surfing are prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty. Please do not go into the water when lifeguards are not present.
