Police Tackle Man Swinging Machete in Toms River

Brookside Drive & Route 37

According to Toms River Police, Sergeant Chris McDowell was on duty on Monday, May 16, 2022, at approximately 7:35 p.m. when he noticed an irate guy with what appeared to be a huge knife ranting at passing motorists near the intersection of Brookside Drive and Route 37.

When he saw the man with the knife, Robert Wasilick, an off-duty Seaside Heights Police officer, stopped to help. Additional Toms River police officers arrived and established a perimeter around the tiny wooded area where the man had taken refuge.

He was becoming increasingly upset and belligerent, refusing to drop the huge machete he was throwing at the officers. Officer Brian Appleby used the chance to confront the guy and secure the machete after around twenty minutes of failed dialogue. Officers apprehended the suspect and took him to Community Medical Center for assessment. He faces charges of unauthorized weapon possession and disorderly conduct.

I would like to commend all of the officers for an incredible amount of restraint which could have certainly become a deadly force situation. ~Chief Mitch Little
