According to Beachwood Police Department, after the Halloween dance at Toms River Intermediate School South ended chaotically on Friday night, authorities announced Saturday that they are looking into the origin of a false report about a stabbing.
When the dance took place at the school on Pinewald Road, Beachwood Police said its officers were there and "can certify no such incident occurred."
According to Beachwood police, two medical crises were attended to, "neither of which was related to any physical altercation."
Superintendent of Toms River Regional Schools Michael Citta stated that there were two distinct instances where children experienced panic episodes. He said that the panic attacks took place before the rumors circulated.
No one was hurt or bleeding, Citta reported over the phone on Saturday.
Citta stated that the district and law enforcement are looking into the rumor's origin and whether it was distributed intentionally or not.
Authorities repeatedly assured the students that there was no stabbing and no weapon, but Citta stated that as the stories spread more swiftly, terrified students were forced to leave the dance.
Even while the district and police department attempted to address the fact that the rumor was false, parents whose children called them described the scenario as "very scary."
Citta stated that the Beachwood Police Department immediately sent an email to parents in an effort to put an end to the falsehoods.
"Tonight, at our Halloween dance rumors were spread about possible violence at Intermediate South," Principal Paul T. Gluck wrote in the email to parents. "Unfortunately, false rumors spread quickly and caused students to exit the building. There were a few students who did have health concerns therefore requiring medical attention."
"The Beachwood police were present at the dance and found no credible threat. Our staff worked to ensure students all went home safely," Gluck said. "It was an unfortunate end to one of our most attended dances. Please know we will work to ensure this does not occur in the future events."
Police in Beachwood claim they received multiple calls from worried parents, but after looking into the matter, they discovered it was untrue.
According to police, "We continue to engage with the Intermediate School faculty and staff to swiftly and precisely refute any unfounded charges."
