One Jersey Shore beach town has issued a warning that it will issue tickets to those who enter the water, following fatalities and numerous rescues.
According to reports, Seaside Heights may issue tickets to anybody who enters the ocean this weekend despite being warned to remain out of it.
According to reports from NJ.com and the Asbury Park Press, Seaside Heights Mayor Anthony Vaz said police may issue tickets as the town works to keep people out of the ocean due to the hazardous conditions brought on by Hurricane Lee offshore.According to Vaz, the borough will post notices on the boardwalk the whole weekend prohibiting swimming due to the high risk of rip currents and rough surf.
The Mayor also advised, "We will issue tickets if there is disrespect, like staying in the ocean or if they go back in later when they think nobody's around."
Seaside Heights experienced big waves on Thursday, and as the storm moves in and out, bigger waves are predicted for Friday and Saturday.
Because of the dangerous rip currents and huge waves, as well as the fact that there are no lifeguards on duty, the municipality adopted a new rule: Anyone caught swimming may be issued a ticket.
