NJ Fisherman's Epic Encounter with a Great White Shark
Travis Bogin has been one of the very few individuals who have experienced an unplanned close encounter with a great white shark off the shore of New Jersey according to the Asbury Park Press.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning while 39-year-old Bogin, who was raised in Toms River and currently resides in Little Egg Harbor, was fishing 12 miles off the coast of Atlantic City on a wreck. A little white shark attacked one of his baits as it prowled around while he was hunting for thresher sharks, a species known for its long, sickle-shaped tails used to astonish prey.He said that he did not take the shark out of the water. After severing the wire leader at the hook, he freed the shark and saw it take off on its own. His bait was a rustable circle hook, the kind that falls out on its own after catching a fish by the jaw. The hook in this instance was located in the shark's jaw corner. He measured the shark's length at five and a half feet.
