Jersey Shore: Tragic Deaths of Two Minke Whales

According to the The Marine Mammal Stranding Center of Brigantine two deceased minke whales were found near the Jersey Shore this week.

The U.S. Coast Guard discovered a dead minke whale drifting in the lower Raritan Bay on Thursday, according to stranding center personnel. The whale, estimated between 16 and 18 feet long, was marked with a tracking tag by marine animal experts who are monitoring its movements. Staff at the stranding center said on Facebook that scientists were waiting for the dead whale to wash up on the coast, perhaps close to Sandy Hook, so they could inspect its remains.

According to Police Chief Christian LaCicero, after Lavallette Police responded to a call near the beach at Trenton Avenue on Friday morning, they found a second dead whale in the waves.

Staff at the center said that the whale carcass at Lavallette was between ten and twelve feet long.

According to LaCicero, the second dead whale was moved to the Lavallette public works yard to keep it from washing out to sea. Experts in marine mammals were scheduled to examine the body and conduct a necropsy on Friday.
