On Saturday, July 6, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Trooper I Michael Buchell and Trooper I Shane McClafferty from Carteret Station responded to a report of a distressed dog in the Arthur Kill in Elizabeth, Union County. While patrolling near the Elizabeth Marina, they observed unusual movement in the water. They discovered a small dog, believed to be about one year old, struggling against the strong tidal current.

Tpr. McClafferty skillfully positioned the vessel while Tpr. Buchell deployed a life ring and rescue blanket to bring the dog aboard safely. The dog showed signs of fatigue and early-stage hypothermia, prompting the troopers to administer immediate care, including drying and warming the animal.
