Tragic Incident at Jersey Shore: One Swimmer Dies, Another Survives

One of two swimmers that required emergency responses on Saturday, according to authorities, was a man from North Jersey who died after being pulled from the ocean in Seaside Park.

According to Seaside Park Police Sgt. Andrew Casole , John DeVone, 54, of Whippany, was declared deceased at Community Medical Center in Toms River following the incident.

At 11:52 a.m., a beachgoer claimed to have spotted a man who seemed distressed at the 8th Avenue beach and dialed 911 when she could no longer see him.
He said DeVone was taken to shore by the fire department's water rescue unit. Rescuers began CPR on DeVone while he was unconscious and before he was transported to the hospital, according to Casole.

According to Casole, the second incident occurred on Saturday at 1:35 p.m. when a woman was reported to be in trouble at the beach on 13th Avenue.

He claimed that despite the deployment of the water rescue team, the unnamed woman managed to swim to shore by herself.
Residents and tourists are being reminded by the police that lifeguards are no longer on duty and that the beach season has officially ended. Because rip currents and shifting surf conditions can quickly turn dangerous, even for experienced swimmers, authorities strongly advise everyone to avoid the ocean when lifeguards are not present.
