Confrontation at NJ Walmart Ends with Man Punching Employee at Checkout
After assaulting a Walmart clerk and causing a brain bleed, a 50-year-old Vineland resident was given a sentence of time in state prison.
Shawn C. Thomas entered a guilty plea to second-degree aggravated assault and was sentenced to seven years in New Jersey State Prison on Monday, according to the
Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office.
The No Early Release Act governs his jail sentence.
In order to be eligible for parole, Thomas must complete 85% of his sentence and serve three years of parole supervision following his release.
Officers from the Vineland Police Department arrived at the Walmart at
1070 West Landis Ave. on July 28, 2023, in response to a report of an employee who had been beaten by a customer and rendered unconscious.
Thomas passed through the self-checkout line without paying for everything in his basket, according to surveillance footage that Walmart loss prevention officers supplied to the police.
According to officials, Thomas struck a man who works there once before leaving the store.
The worker suffered severe injuries, including a brain bleed and concussion, and was left unconscious on the ground.
