A stranded bear cub is now safe thanks to quick action by the New Jersey State Police. Troopers responded Wednesday afternoon to a report of a lone cub spotted along Interstate 78 in Union Township, Hunterdon County. The young bear was found in a roadside ditch near a busy highway, appearing to be alone and in need of help.

Police safely secured the cub and transported it from the scene without incident. Authorities then turned the animal over to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, where it is now receiving proper care.

Officials have not said how the cub became separated, but the rescue likely prevented a dangerous situation for both the animal and motorists traveling the heavily trafficked roadway.
