Fifth Earthquake Recorded in New Jersey Region This Year

Late on Wednesday night, a little earthquake struck Hunterdon County, making it New Jersey's fifth earthquake of 2026.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that late on Wednesday night, a small earthquake was registered in Hunterdon County, so weak that no one reported experiencing any shaking.

The center of the magnitude 1.0 earthquake was approximately 3 miles northeast of Whitehouse Station, which is extremely near to the location of the March 8 magnitude 1.3 tremor.

It was New Jersey's fifth recorded earthquake of the year.

Experts refer to a magnitude 1.0 earthquake as a "micro earthquake" since it is typically picked up by sensitive seismographs and is not felt by humans, making it a tiny seismic event.

The U.S. Geological Survey received no complaints as of early Thursday morning from residents of New Jersey claiming to have experienced any shaking or loud noises that would typically be connected to earthquakes of greater size.

Numerous residents in Hunterdon, Morris, and Somerset counties felt a magnitude 2.4 earthquake on January 30. The January earthquake was located at 6.2 miles northwest of Bridgewater and 4 miles northeast of Whitehouse Station.

A magnitude 1.4 earthquake was recorded on March 12 in Morris County, roughly two miles west of Morristown. Like the earthquake on Wednesday night, there were no reports of trembling during the March 12 tremor.
