According to school officials, the 16-year-old high school student who was killed by a train in Red Bank on Wednesday morning was crossing the tracks on his way home from the YMCA.

Community residents identified the child as Terry Haupt, a sophomore at Red Bank Regional High School who participated in athletics.

An NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line train struck him at the Red Bank station at approximately 6:20 a.m., according to officials.

At 6:08 a.m., the train left Long Branch bound Penn Station in New York. There were no injuries to any of the 55 passengers or crew members on board.

According to the Asbury Park Press, the adolescent was wearing headphones when the crash occurred.
Louis Moore, superintendent of the Red Bank Regional High School District, stated that the student was a popular adolescent with plenty of friends and that the incident was an accident.

Moore stated, "It's been challenging for our staff and students, and it's a great loss for our school."

He claimed that in order to provide students structure and normalcy, school and extracurricular activities had gone on as planned.

Community people have given food and materials to help students and staff, and school counselors have been on hand all week.

According to Moore, students prepared meals for the teen's family and made a condolence card for the entire school.

"They've shown genuine empathy and concern for one another, and we're all really pleased of them for that," Moore remarked.

Haupt was a member of Red Bank American Youth Football for a number of years before to joining the high school football team, according to Alan Soden, president of the group.

According to Moore, the teenager was also on the high school track team.
As of Friday, the family's fundraising, which was run through the RedBankBucs Venmo account, had raised roughly $19,000, according to Soden.

On Friday, there was no information available regarding funeral services.
