Over 18,000 Residents Lose Power in New Jersey Storms

Strong thunderstorms passed over New Jersey on Wednesday night, leaving over 18,000 homes without electricity.

Forecasters issued severe thunderstorm warnings for all 21 counties in the state, predicting sporadic storms with heavy rainfall, huge hail, and wind gusts of up to 60 to 70 mph.

At least ten counties have already received storm warnings from the National Weather Service, and three regions of the state have received flash flood alerts. The storm comes after a heat wave that caused temperatures in certain areas of the state to rise as high as 99 degrees this week.
18,568 consumers were without power as of 6:45 p.m. 8,903 outages were reported by Jersey Central Power & Light. 6,894 more PSE&G consumers were without electricity.

While 257 Orange & Rockland customers experienced outages, Atlantic City Electric reported 2,514 customers without power.

The FAA has also had to impose ground stops at Philadelphia International Airport, JFK International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport due to the extreme weather.
