Intermediate East educator celebrated for her passion, authenticity, and student‑centered leadership

TOMS RIVER — Angela Germano, a beloved Language Arts teacher at Intermediate East, has been officially named the 2026–2027 Ocean County Teacher of the Year, marking a major milestone for both her school and the Toms River Regional School District.

The honor was announced Aug. 11 during a New Jersey Department of Education ceremony in Ewing Township, where 21 educators—one from each county—were recognized for excellence in teaching. Germano is the first TRRS educator to earn the county distinction since 2022–2023.

A Career Built on Joy, Gratitude, and Authenticity

Germano’s teaching philosophy centers on empowering students to embrace their authentic selves, even through adversity. Her classroom is known for its warmth, creativity, and a sense of genuine connection—qualities shaped by her own experiences. After losing her mother to cancer in ninth grade, Germano found strength in teachers who showed up for her with compassion rather than pity. That model of care continues to guide her work today.

“Growing up is hard, and when teachers are happy to be in their students’ lives and model the essential skills to navigate those challenges, it makes all the difference,” she said.

Her efforts have long been recognized locally. Germano was named Intermediate East’s 2025–2026 Teacher of the Year, celebrated alongside district leaders and colleagues. She has also been featured as an author, served as a PBS guest panelist, and helped lead innovative schoolwide initiatives—from art exhibitions to selfie celebrations—all designed to help students feel seen and valued.

District Leaders Praise Her Impact

Superintendent Michael Citta called Germano “the personification of passion with a purpose,” noting her ability to turn her love of teaching into measurable student achievement. “We are honored and proud to call the 2026–2027 Ocean County Teacher of the Year one of our own,” he said.

A Teacher Who Sees Each Day as a Privilege

For Germano, the award is a reminder of the privilege she feels in shaping young lives. “Every day we get to do this,” she said. “We get to wake up and make the most of each moment of our life, as well as each of our students. The excitement is real — we should all feel it.”

In addition to her new county honor, Germano was previously named the New Jersey American Legion Educator of the Year in 2010 and is currently a doctoral candidate in general psychology at Grand Canyon University.
