33-Year-Old NJ Woman Dies After Jumping Into Delaware River to Save Struggling Child
The body of a 33-year-old woman was recovered from the Delaware River after she entered the water Monday afternoon in an attempt to help a child who was struggling, according to the Delran Township Police Department.
Authorities said Priscila Alvares Pereira Dos Santos was found dead around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, which was her birthday. Her body was located approximately 20 feet offshore from a beach at Amico Island Park.
Drone operators from the Burlington County Sheriff’s Office and the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management assisted in the search effort.
Around 4 p.m. Monday, officers were called to 81 Norman Ave. after receiving a report that two people may have drowned.
Authorities said a woman entered the water in an effort to rescue a young girl who was struggling. The woman managed to push the girl toward nearby bystanders, who were able to pull her safely from the water. The woman then went underwater and did not resurface.
The search was called off around 9:45 p.m. Monday and resumed at approximately 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials said the woman’s death does not appear to be suspicious.
Amico Island Park was closed Tuesday as authorities continued their investigation and recovery efforts.
Community members are also raising money online to help cover funeral expenses and provide support for the woman’s family.
