According to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, William Garvin, 67, of Barnegat Township, was charged with murder on September 8, 2026, in connection with the death of his wife, 69-year-old Eileen Garvin.
Authorities said the incident occurred on September 7, when Barnegat Township police officers responded to a home on
Windward Drive at approximately 6:30 p.m. following a report of domestic violence.
Officers entered the residence and found William Garvin sitting in a chair with a knife protruding from his chest. Inside the home, they also discovered Eileen Garvin deceased on the floor.
William Garvin was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City for treatment. He was reported to be in stable condition.
The investigation was conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit. Investigators determined that William Garvin was responsible for his wife’s death and that the knife wound he suffered was self-inflicted.
Garvin was formally charged with murder and served with a complaint-warrant while at the hospital. Officials said that after he is released, he will be taken to the
Ocean County Jail, where he will remain in custody pending a detention hearing.
Prosecutor Billhimer praised the agencies involved, including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office, for their work on the investigation.
The charges are allegations, and Garvin is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
