One Dead After Shooting at Wawa in Toms River

TOMS RIVER, NJ — One person was killed in a shooting Friday morning at a Wawa on Route 37 in Toms River, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

The shooting was reported around 7:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the Wawa located at the intersection of Route 37 and Garfield Avenue, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

Authorities have not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or the identity of the victim.

Anyone who may have information about the shooting is asked to contact the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit at 732-929-2027 or the Toms River Police Department at 732-349-0150. The shooting and subsequent investigation were not impacting nearby Toms River Regional schools, Superintendent Michael Citta said.

“We are operating as usual,” Citta said.

At approximately 7:50 a.m., the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert advising the public to avoid the area of Route 37 and Garfield Avenue because of ongoing police activity.

Multiple law enforcement vehicles, including units from the Toms River Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, were at the scene.
