POWERFUL NOR'EASTER: The first nor'easter of the season is expected to slam NJ

Don’t cancel your plans just yet, but it may be a good idea to keep an umbrella handy.

A nor’easter is expected to develop along the East Coast this week, with the storm’s track potentially bringing it toward New Jersey. Because the system is still several days away, it’s too early to determine how directly the state could be affected. However, the storm is expected to influence weather conditions across the region later this week.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will be around the Jersey Shore today and throughout the week , while the main coastal storm is expected to arrive later in the week.

A coastal storm is expected to impact the Jersey Shore with several rounds of tidal flooding and wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph through Friday, with conditions potentially continuing into the weekend according to forecasters.

Rain showers are forecast across much of New Jersey on Tuesday, particularly areas south of I-78. The showers should gradually diminish during the afternoon and evening.

A few lingering showers could remain in far southern New Jersey Tuesday night and into early Wednesday. Tuesday’s temperatures are expected to stay in the 60s.

Coastal flood advisories are set to begin Tuesday afternoon, with coastal flood watches in place from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday night.

The National Weather Service said early Tuesday that the risk of tidal flooding has grown as a slow-moving coastal storm becomes increasingly likely.

The combination of a full moon expected Saturday and continued northeast winds could contribute to moderate coastal flooding on Wednesday and Thursday.

Although major flooding is not currently expected, the National Weather Service said the possibility cannot be ruled out, particularly as the region approaches Saturday’s full moon.

A wind advisory is also in effect for most of the Jersey Shore from 6 a.m. through midnight Wednesday. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts potentially reaching 45 mph.

Rough ocean conditions and significant beach erosion are expected along the Jersey Shore through the end of the week.

Most of New Jersey should stay dry on Wednesday and Thursday, although windy conditions are expected, with the strongest gusts occurring Wednesday and Wednesday night.
