NJ Weather: Coastal Storm Threat Grows as Track Remains Uncertain

National Weather Service forecasters say a coastal storm is becoming increasingly likely to form offshore in the Atlantic later this week. However, the extent of its impact on New Jersey remains uncertain until forecasters have a clearer picture of the storm’s track and strength.

For now, forecasters are warning of potentially hazardous coastal conditions, including wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph, dangerous rip currents, rough surf and significant beach erosion.

The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly said widespread tidal flooding could develop along the Jersey Shore depending on how close the storm moves to New Jersey and how strong the accompanying winds and rainfall become.

Little to no rain is currently expected Wednesday and Thursday, but the developing coastal system is expected to interact with an area of high pressure, producing strong winds across eastern parts of the state.

The weather service said Tuesday afternoon that the storm’s surface low could remain offshore for several days, resulting in strong winds and high seas across local marine areas.

Wind and Flood Alerts Issued

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for New Jersey’s immediate Atlantic coastline from 6 a.m. Wednesday through midnight Wednesday night. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts potentially reaching around 45 mph.

A coastal flood advisory remains in effect through 10 p.m. Tuesday for Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties, where minor tidal flooding is expected.

The coastal flood watch for Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties has been upgraded to a coastal flood warning, running from Wednesday afternoon through late Thursday night. Forecasters say tide levels could rise to the moderate flooding threshold during that period.

Significant beach erosion is expected along the Jersey Shore through the end of the week. Check your local forecast.
