Bomb Threat Prompts Lockdown and Evacuation at Cape May County Park & Zoo
A bomb threat made just after 4:00 p.m. Monday prompted a full lockdown and evacuation at the Cape May County Park & Zoo. Visitors and staff were moved to safety, and animals were secured as law enforcement responded.
The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office and Middle Township Police led the investigation, deploying four bomb‑sniffing dogs to search the zoo and surrounding park areas. After an extensive sweep, officials declared the facility all clear. A follow‑up sweep is scheduled for tomorrow morning as an added precaution.
“The safety of our visitors, our staff, and the animals in our care is always the first priority,” said Commissioner Director Leonard C. Desiderio. “Thanks to the Sheriff’s Office, Middle Township Police, and the K‑9 teams, we can tell the public the grounds have been searched and deemed all clear.”
Officials noted that false bomb threats have disrupted zoos across the country throughout the year. Authorities emphasize that every threat is treated as credible until a full investigation is complete.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office or Middle Township Police.
