NJ Weather: Sunshine Dominates Inland Areas as Nor’easter Brings Wind and Coastal Flooding

New Jersey is in for a mostly bright and dry stretch of weather this week, but residents along the Jersey Shore will have to contend with gusty winds, rough surf and several rounds of coastal flooding as a slow-moving nor’easter remains offshore.

The storm system is expected to stay far enough away from New Jersey to keep widespread rain out of the forecast. Instead, its biggest effects will be felt along the coast, where persistent northeast winds will push water toward the shoreline and back bays.

Sunshine Across Much of New Jersey

For most of the state, the forecast remains relatively quiet. Inland communities can expect plenty of sunshine, dry conditions and seasonable fall temperatures.

Highs will generally remain in the 60s, with overnight temperatures dropping into the 40s. The pleasant conditions will contrast sharply with the rougher weather along the coast.

Gusty Winds Along the Jersey Shore

Northeast winds are expected to strengthen through Wednesday, with gusts around 30 to 35 mph possible near the coast. Stronger winds are expected over the ocean, creating hazardous conditions for boaters.

The National Weather Service says the offshore nor’easter will continue producing coastal impacts through about Thursday.

Rough surf and an increased risk of beach erosion are also expected along the Jersey Shore.

Coastal Flooding Remains a Concern

The greatest concern for coastal communities will be repeated rounds of tidal flooding.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for portions of the Jersey Shore, including Ocean County, with minor flooding possible around Tuesday evening's high tide. Additional flooding is expected during subsequent high-tide cycles.

Forecasters are watching Wednesday's high tide closely, when widespread minor flooding and locally moderate flooding could develop, particularly in vulnerable back-bay locations.

Low-lying roads and areas near tidal waterways could see water cover portions of roadways during the highest tides.

Conditions Should Improve Later This Week

The nor’easter is expected to gradually move away from the region later in the week. Coastal winds should ease, while the remainder of New Jersey continues to enjoy generally dry weather.

For now, inland residents can expect a stretch of beautiful fall weather, while those along the coast should remain alert for changing tide conditions, gusty winds and rough surf.

Residents in flood-prone areas should monitor updated forecasts and allow extra time when traveling near tidal waterways.
