Body Recovered in Toms River Following Extensive Search and Recovery Efforts

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Authorities have recovered the body of a person who had been missing since jumping from the J. Stanley Tunney Bridge on Monday, according to the East Dover Fire Company.

Officials said the body was located in the water Tuesday morning after search and recovery operations resumed. Crews had called off the search around 8:45 p.m. Monday due to safety concerns.

The individual was one of two people who reportedly jumped from the bridge, which carries westbound Route 37 over Barnegat Bay, connecting Seaside Heights and Toms River.

The fire company did not disclose the location where the body was recovered or its distance from the bridge.

Authorities were first notified at approximately 2:34 p.m. Monday after 911 callers reported that someone had jumped from the Route 37 bridge into Barnegat Bay, according to the fire company.

East Dover Fire Chief Travis Veth arrived at the scene approximately four minutes after the initial emergency call and encountered another individual on the bridge. As he moved closer, that person jumped into Barnegat Bay. The individual was conscious and responsive, and rescuers immediately deployed a life ring to assist. A fireboat operated by the Island Heights Fire Company subsequently reached the person, brought them out of the water, and transported them to Pier One Marina at the foot of the bridge in Toms River.

Emergency medical personnel later transported the rescued individual to a hospital, according to the fire company.

Meanwhile, witnesses and video footage from the area indicated that a separate individual had entered the water before Chief Veth arrived.

The search operation continued for several hours, involving the U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, Ocean Beach Fire Company, a Brick Township dive team, and the Toms River Police Department’s drone unit.

The fire company said Tuesday that the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office and Toms River Police Dive Unit also provided assistance during the search and recovery operation.

In a statement, the fire company offered its condolences to the deceased individual’s family and loved ones while expressing appreciation to all agencies involved for their cooperation and coordinated response.
