Heavy Downpours Could Impact New Jersey

Heavy rain and thunderstorms could move into New Jersey late Thursday and continue into Friday, potentially causing localized flash flooding, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

“A slow moving cold front approaches the area Thursday night into Friday bringing the potential for heavy rain to portions of the area,” the weather service said early Wednesday.

Before the unsettled weather arrives, residents can expect another seasonably warm and pleasant day, with temperatures reaching the low to mid-70s on Wednesday.

These temperatures are expected to run 10 to 15 degrees above average for early November, although they may fall just below daily record highs for Nov. 4. Newark's record high for the date is 79 degrees, set in 1994. Thursday will bring slightly cooler temperatures, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Most areas should remain dry throughout the day, although clouds will gradually increase.

The approaching cold front is forecast to arrive late Thursday and linger over the region into Friday, bringing periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms. Friday's temperatures are expected to reach the upper 60s and low 70s.

Forecasters say areas south and east of the I-95 corridor face the greatest risk of heavy rainfall. However, uncertainty remains regarding how quickly the front will move through the region. A slower-moving system could result in higher rainfall totals and an increased risk of localized flooding.

The heaviest rainfall is expected to taper off by Saturday morning, although scattered showers may continue throughout the day.

Conditions should gradually improve Saturday night and into Sunday, with no significant weather concerns expected. High temperatures over the weekend are forecast to remain in the 60s across most of New Jersey. Stay up-to-date with the latest forecast.
