Cherry Hill Police Talk Man Down From NJ Overpass After 20-Minute Conversation

CHERRY HILL, NJ — Quick thinking, patience, and compassion helped prevent a potential tragedy in South Jersey after two police officers successfully convinced a man threatening to jump from an overpass to return to safety.

According to the Cherry Hill Police Department, officers responded around 12:30 p.m. to the Haddonfield Road overpass above Route 38 after receiving a report of a man standing outside the safety fence and threatening to jump into traffic below.

Two Cherry Hill police officers arrived at the scene, including an officer assigned to the department’s Critical Incident Negotiating Team.

Rather than rushing the situation, the officers took time to communicate with the man, listen to his concerns, and establish a level of trust.

Police said the officers worked together throughout the encounter, using patience and understanding to encourage the man to move away from the dangerous area.

As the situation unfolded, authorities temporarily stopped traffic along Haddonfield Road and Route 38 below the overpass to protect motorists and allow officers to safely handle the incident.

After approximately 20 minutes of conversation, the officers successfully persuaded the man to come back to safety.

Fortunately, he was not injured.

Police said the man continued speaking with officers as he was taken to receive additional care.

The department publicly recognized Officers Jared Colbert and John Casey for their response and the compassion they demonstrated during the incident.

In a statement, the Cherry Hill Police Department praised both officers for their professionalism, patience, and commitment to protecting human life.

Officials emphasized that taking the time to listen and treating someone experiencing a crisis with dignity played an important role in bringing the situation to a safe conclusion.

The incident serves as a reminder of the important role police officers can play beyond traditional law enforcement, particularly when responding to individuals experiencing emotional distress.

Thanks to the efforts of the two officers, what could have ended in tragedy instead resulted in a safe outcome.
