Rescue workers are digging through rubble and debris looking for signs of life after Thursday morning's building collapse in the town of Surfside, just north of Miami, Florida. Around 1:30 a.m., an estimated 55 condominiums fell to the ground, most of them with residents asleep inside. They are still searching for survivors.
According to New Jersey Congressman Chris Smith, a Lakewood, New Jersey, couple and the woman's father are among the more than 150 people said to be missing in the collapse of part of a condominium building near Miami.
Benny and Malky Weisz of Lakewood, and Malky's father Harry Rosenberg, were identified by Congressman Smith of New Jersey's 4th District as three people among the 159 who remained unaccounted for following the collapse at the 12-story oceanfront Champlain Towers South Condo at 8777 Collins Ave.
Four people have been confirmed dead as a result of the collapse, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Friday.
News 12 is reporting that The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department has confirmed that one of those four people was 54-year-old Staci Dawn Fang from Monroe Township, New Jersey.
There is still no cause reported on how this structure crumbled. Investigations are still underway. Experts are speculating that "construction or engineering defects" could have played a part. Others say that Miami's coastal air may have eroded the steel of the building.
