Ground-shaking explosions are expected during 5 days of howitzer and mortar training at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst
It's Training At The Joint Base
Starting Friday, live mortar fire, howitzer fire, and cratering explosions are set for five days of "abundant noise" training at New Jersey's largest military facility, which will likely rock surrounding counties and be heard from miles away.
Throughout the year, the facility conducts a variety of training activities, ranging from in-flight training to practice firing mortars and other explosives. Training sessions can last late into the evening.
During busy training months, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst displays a monthly schedule to warn adjacent towns and to avoid calls to local 911 dispatchers. The "abundant noise" alarm is the most severe of the three.
Highest Noise Levels Friday to Tuesday
Low clouds typically causes the noise to travel farther. The current forecast calls for mostly or partly cloudy skies Friday and Saturday, though clouds and rain are expected for Sunday to Tuesday.
For most of November, the base has been under moderate noise alerts.
Weather circumstances, as well as the type of explosives training being conducted, influence how far and loudly the training can be heard and felt.
Residents in the area of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst can expect to hear some loud explosions from training
