They Leave Big Shoes to Fill
At an emotional meeting in town hall Tuesday night, three township council members bid their goodbyes to government service.
Councilwomen Laurie Huryk and Maria Maruca, as well as Councilman Terrance Turnbach, will leave office on Friday, but their last council meeting was on Tuesday. Mayor Maurice B. "Mo" Hill Jr., their council colleagues, and several members of the public who spoke praised all three.
Huryk and Turnbach are the council's only two Democrats; Maruca, a Republican, has represented Ward 1's seaside regions since January 2004. After the township organizes for the year on Monday, all seven council members will be Republicans, and there will be no women on the governing body for the first time in 18 years.
"I think this council is going to miss a femail perspective ," Maruca remarked.
Members of the council who were leaving were praised by their peers.
