Seaman Kyle Mullen, 24, of Manalapan
The Navy revealed on Friday that a star Manalapan High School athlete who went on to play football at Yale and Monmouth died after completing the tough initial phase of US Navy SEAL training known as "Hell Week."
Kyle Mullen, 24, of Manalapan, died in a hospital in Coronado, California, near San Diego, on Friday evening. According to the Navy, the cause of his death is being investigated.
According to
NavyTimes.com, "The program is so grueling that at least 50-60 per-cent don't make it through Hell Week, when candidates are pushed to the limit." Meaning that 50-60 percent fail-out or quit the program.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Seaman Mullen’s family for their loss,” said Rear Admiral H.W. Howard III, commander, Naval Special Warfare Command. “We are extending every form of support we can to the Mullen family and Kyle’s classmates.”
Mullen and his Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL (BUD/S) class finished "Hell Week" earlier on Friday, an evaluation that candidates must pass in order to be considered for future SEAL selection. Mullen was not in active training when he died, according to the Navy.
"He was a wonderful youngster who always had a big smile on his face. Mike Hammer, his travel soccer league coach, described him as "funny, very smart, highly gifted, and able to accomplish anything he set his mind to." "He was a fantastic kid."
Mullen was a linebacker and tight end for Manalapan and was voted team most valuable player after leading the Braves to a Central Jersey Group V state title in 2014. In the 21-7 win over South Brunswick, he scored a touchdown catch and a sack.
According to his Yale biography, he was a six-time letter winner in football and basketball. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and on the Honor Roll.
Mullen was a forward on the Manalapan basketball team, and according to
NJ.com sports stats, he scored 266 points in his senior year.
Hammer said, "He was an extremely talented basketball and football player." "He was a brilliant young man, and a wonderful kid," Hammer added.
He transferred to Yale in 2015, where he played in seven games as a freshman. According to Yale, Mullen was named to the All Ivy League second team in 2017 and was named team captain in 2018.
In 2019, he returned to
Monmouth University for his fifth year, seeing action throughout the season and finished with 26 tackles and five sacks.
