This year, over 1 million drivers with E-ZPass accounts in New Jersey will receive a new transponder in the mail to replace aging tags that are nearing the end of their functional lives.
Yes, they have an expiration date.
This is why, this year, about 920,000 new tags will be delivered to drivers with valid E-ZPass accounts, along with a pre-paid return envelope to return the old tag.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority kicked up the process in November when it approved a $8.4 million contract supplement with Conduent State & Local Solutions, Inc. to supply 920,000 E-ZPass transponders to replace those that are about to expire.
The cost per tag to Conduent will pay $8.75 per tag for each transponder swapped, which the Turnpike Authority will repay.
The transponders' typical battery life is between eight and ten years, which is why they're being changed. Officials said the new transponders will look similar to the old ones and will have a battery life of more than a decade.
The Delaware River Port Authority, Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, Cape May County Bridge Commission, Burlington County Bridge Commission, and the Delaware River and Bay Authority bridges are all served by the New Jersey E-ZPass consortium.
"Motorists crossing Delaware River Port Authority Bridges own approximately 47,000 of the roughly one million transponders," said James White, DRPA Chief Financial Officer, in a statement. "These transponders are about a decade old, and we're taking proactive measures to replace them before they stop operating."
Since E-ZPass began in New Jersey, this is the third such tag swap. The most recent was a two-year tag swap scheme that ran from 2012 to 2013. Between 2006 and 2007, 935,000 transponders were replaced in the first tag replacement.
Drivers with good accounts are not required to take any action. Officials stated that tag replacement kits will be mailed to them automatically.
Replacement tags will not be issued to drivers whose accounts have been inactive for 12 months or more. The new tags will not be charged to the drivers.
