A Beachwood Man has Pleaded Guilty to Four Robberies in Toms River

Thomas M. Jann, 34 of Beachwood

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said that a Beachwood man pled guilty to a spree of robberies at convenience stores and a grocery store in numerous Ocean County communities in December 2020.

Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said Thomas M. Jann, 34, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two charges of first-degree robbery, four counts of second-degree robbery, and one act of burglary before Ocean County Superior Court Judge Michael T. Collins.

At sentencing on Jan. 14, prosecutors will seek a term of 16 years in prison for the first-degree counts, eight years for the second-degree offenses, and four years for the burglary charge, with the sentences to run consecutively, according to Billhimer.

According to Billhimer, Jann was identified as the culprit in six robberies that occurred between December 19, 2020 and December 31, 2020, following an investigation by Toms River, Berkeley Township, and Beachwood police.

Jann confessed the following:

  • A robbery on Route 9 in Toms River on Dec. 19, in which he assaulted a gas station employee and grabbed money from the cash register;
  • A heist at Robin's Convenience Store in Beachwood on Christmas Eve, in which he brandished what seemed to be a box cutter at the cashier and snatched money from the register;
  • A robbery at the ShopRite on Route 9 in Bayville on Dec. 26 in which he grabbed money from a register and shoved a lady as he fled;
  • A robbery at Krauser's Hooper Avenue in Toms River on December 26 in which he assaulted the cashier and took cigarettes;
  • A robbery at the 7-Eleven on Route 166 in Toms River on Dec. 30 in which he grabbed the cashier by the neck and held a rock to his head, then stole cash from the register and fled the store;
  • A robbery at the Exxon Tiger Mart on Route 37 in Toms River on New Year's Eve in which he threw hot coffee at the attendant and stole money from the cash register.
  • According to Billhimer, Jann was charged with burglary after evidence was discovered that he had broken into a Beachwood residence on July 27, 2020, and stolen cash.

    Jann was arrested by Toms River police on January 1, 2021, and has been imprisoned in the Ocean County Jail since then, according to Billhimer.
