Around 2 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters and police responded to a sprinkler system alarm and discovered a fire in the basement, which Lakewood Fire Company firefighters extinguished, according to Billhimer.
Investigators discovered that someone had set fire to cardboard and paper in the basement with an open flame, and the inquiry proved that Euxaque-Ballesteros was the perpetrator, according to Billhimer. Authorities did not specify when he was terminated.
The prosecutor's office said Euxaque-Ballesteros was arrested later that day and is being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
