Aircraft Crashes off the Coast of Long Beach Island

According to Ocean County Authorities, they are investigating a report of a glider plane down off Long Beach Island in New Jersey. The incident was reported one mile off the coast around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy said officers were out on jet skis. Police officers and emergency crews are searching the waters after a witness reported the plane go into the water. The Coast Guard is also involved in the search for the plane and passengers.

New Jersey State Police officials confirmed they were assisting with the recovery of an aircraft off the coast of Long Beach Island, but no other information was immediately available.

“We have received a report of a plane crash off Long Beach Island,” the Coast Guard said in a Tweet. “Coast Guard has diverted a helo from Air Station Atlantic City and crews from Station Atlantic City and Station Barnegat Light.”

Weather conditions at the time of the incident were calm, with no storms and no major wind gusts reported in the New Jersey region.

Video from the scene shows boats and helicopters searching a wide area offshore. New Jersey State Police and Coast Guard helicopters were among those participating in the search.

UPDATE: The Ocean County Sheriff’s office told news media the reports of small aircraft in water off Long Beach Island were unfounded shortly after 1 p.m.
