Armed Toms River Man was Apprehended after Barricading Himself in his Toms River Home

After a brief standoff, Toms River police officers took a man who had barricaded himself in a township home into protective custody.

According to the Toms River Police Department, on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at approximately 4:05 pm, a reported emotionally disturbed male acting erratically in the residence with a bat and knives prompted police to respond to Patmas Drive.

Family members were evacuated from the residence when police arrived, and cops built a perimeter around the property to protect the neighborhood, officers, and the male party.

After refusing to comply the officer's directions, the male opened the front door with a bat and a large knife and closed it, refusing to come out.

The Toms River Police Department's Emergency Services Unit and detective negotiators arrived on the scene and initiated a phone conversation. A tactical squad entered the home after the phone conversations finished, immediately locating the male party, and he was placed into protective custody.

He was then taken to Community Medical Center for additional treatment. There were no injuries recorded as a result of the incident.

Members of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office also assisted on the scene.

According to authorities, "these types of calls are unpredictable and extremely dangerous." "We want to thank all of the first responders on the site for their professionalism and dedication to everyone's safety."
