Michael Citta, the principal of Toms River High School South, has been named the Toms River Regional High School District's next superintendent.
Citta was appointed during a special meeting of the school board on Wednesday night, capping a 15-month saga that began when former superintendent David Healy announced his retirement.
Contract terms must still be worked out.
During a brief statement following the news and in private remarks, he acknowledged the upheaval.
"I believe I am the first superintendent in this district who can say he started in kindergarten," Citta added. "They wanted someone from the district; you can't get any closer to the interior than that."
Citta, 46, has worked in the district as a teacher and administrator. He graduated from
Georgian Court University with a bachelor's degree and
Kean University with a master's degree.
He mentioned his wife, Jacqueline, and stated, "My wife and I received our master's together." The couple has two children: Michael, who graduated from Toms River South in June, and Sophia, who is currently a freshman.
He will succeed interim Superintendent Stephen Genco, who was appointed in June to succeed interim Superintendent Thomas Gialanella, who took over after Healy departed on December 31, 2020.
Citta addressed the problems of the previous year, as well as the obstacles the district has encountered with the S2 state aid cuts and the coronavirus outbreak, in his remarks to the audience.
Citta stated, "I'd much rather talk about solutions and opportunities for kids." "I promise I won't let anyone down."
Toms River Regional is the largest suburban district in the state, with more than 14,000 student
