Community Rallies Around McAdoo Family After Devastating House Fire

Help the McAdoo Family Recover from a House Fire

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — April 13, 2026 A quiet Monday morning turned tragic for the McAdoo Family when an accidental house fire destroyed their home and everything inside, leaving the longtime local family with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.

According to neighbors, Maryann McAdoo woke up to the smell of smoke coming from her son Garret’s bedroom. Believing he was still inside, she immediately screamed for help. Unbeknownst to her, Garret had already left for school — a detail that likely saved his life.

As smoke poured from the home, neighbors rushed into action. Several called 911, while longtime neighbor Antonio Lizardo bravely entered the burning home to confirm Garret was not inside and helped bring Maryann to safety.

By the time first responders arrived, flames had overtaken nearly the entire structure. Nothing could be saved.

Investigation Underway

Once the fire was extinguished, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation. Officials are not ruling out the possibility that a lithium‑ion battery may have sparked the blaze — a growing concern in residential fires nationwide.

Maryann Airlifted to Philadelphia Hospital

While Garret and his son, little Garret, worked with police and fire officials at the scene, Maryann was airlifted to Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. She remains in the ICU. The family has asked for privacy regarding her condition, though she is currently listed as stable.

Neighbors Step Up: ‘They’ve Been Our Family for 20+ Years’

The Lizardo/Costello Family, who have lived across from the McAdoos for more than two decades, immediately stepped forward to help. They have launched a GoFundMe to support the rebuilding of the home and to help the family replace essential belongings.

“Neighbors truly become your family,” the organizers wrote. “If you’ve ever met the McAdoos, you know they are the most kind‑hearted, loving people — always the first to help others. Now it’s our turn to help them.”

The fundraiser aims to provide:

  • Clothing and daily essentials
  • Support for Maryann’s recovery

  • Supplies for their family dog
  • Long‑term help as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding
