Congratulations to Toms River High School East Student Shane August for an Amazing Eagle Scout Project

Shane August

Eagle Scout Project is at Toms River Town Hall

According to the Toms River Government facebook page, At the dedication of his Eagle Scout Project on Tuesday afternoon at Toms River Town Hall, Shane August, a 16-year-old junior at Toms River High School East, was joined by his family, fellow Boy Scout Troop 92 members, members of the Toms River Veterans Commission, Mayor Mo Hill, and Councilmen Kevin Geoghegan and Justin Lamb. The family of Michael Kelly, a former Ocean County Corrections Officer, was also present. Shane had created a U.S. Flag Retirement Drop Box in Michael's honor.

The first flag to be decommissioned was delivered by a Veteran Commission member. Kelly, the deceased son of a friend of his mothers was honored in Shane's effort. As an Eagle Scout, Kelly made the decision to establish a Flag Drop Box in his neighborhood. but was prevented from finishing his project when he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and outgrew the Boy Scouts.

Kelly was hospitalized numerous times over many years, he started working as a corrections officer in Ocean County. Kelly was enrolled in Port Authority Police Academy Class #117, but his Crohn's disease regrettably came back and his health deteriorated quickly. Kelly did not complete the Academy, and on January 11, 2019, passed away.

Michael's strength and tenacity inspired me, and I liked the idea for his project so much that I decided I could carry it out in his honor, Shane added. The project is situated in front of the Municipal Building at 33 Washington Street. Anyone in the neighborhood is welcome to dispose of their worn-out, torn, and old flags in this designated drop box. The American Legion or the Scouts will occasionally empty the box, and all the flags will be appropriately retired.
