The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office reported on Monday that an Ocean County man has been given a six-year prison term in connection with the deadly overdose of a woman who died in Toms River in 2020.
Judge Kimarie Rahill of the Superior Court sentenced Jehmar M. Barrett, 36, of Lacey Township on Friday, according to prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer. Before Rahill on June 19, Barrett had pled guilty to manslaughter. Due to the No Early Release Act, he must complete 85 percent of his sentence—or slightly over five years—before being eligible for parole.
On November 24, 2020, Toms River police were called to a residence on Alabama Avenue due to a report of a woman who was not breathing. According to officials, the 35-year-old lady apparently overdosed on drugs and died.
According to investigators,
Barrett supplied the woman cocaine and heroin on November 23, 2020. The woman had fentanyl in her system, according to a toxicology report, and a lab investigation of the pills Barrett sold the victim revealed they were actually fentanyl rather than heroin, and the fentanyl in the drugs matched the fentanyl in the victim's system.
Barrett was charged with the victim's death on April 29, 2021, after the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office determined that the fentanyl detected in the victim's system was the cause of death.
Barrett surrendered himself at Toms River police headquarters on April 30, 2021, and was released as a consequence of New Jersey Bail Reform.
He was being held in the Ocean County Jail Monday pending transfer to state prison.
