Authorities said a Manahawkin man has been found guilty by a jury of murdering and sexually assaulting his girlfriend's 23-month-old child in 2016.
In connection with the killing of the kid known as A.S., Michael Disporto, 29, was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault, according to
Gloucester City Police Chief Brian Morrell and Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay.
Disporto, who was not the girl's father, faces a life sentence, MacAulay and Morrell said.
On July 3, 2016, according to authorities, Gloucester City police responded to a report of an unconscious youngster.
A.S. was transferred to
Cooper University Hospital, where it was discovered that she had sustained "extensive injuries" and shown indicators of sexual abuse, according to the authorities.
She passed away from her wounds two days later. According to authorities, blunt force trauma was the cause of her death, which was classified as a homicide.
According to authorities, Disporto and the girl's mother, Amber Bobo, had been dating for two weeks before to the child's demise.
On July 2, 2016, the two removed the child from the home of the biological father and brought her to Bobo's residence in Gloucester City, according to a probable cause statement. Later that evening, Disporto accompanied the girl alone to the park and the fireworks, spending around 45 minutes with her to "get to know her better." Bobo claimed she was too exhausted to accompany them.
According to the police, Disporto assaulted the girl and persuaded Bobo not to take her to the hospital when she began to show signs of bruises on her body or when she began to throw up frequently during the following few days.
After some time, Bobo brought her kid to the hospital, where she had emergency brain surgery. On July 5, after the procedure, she underwent two checks for brain activity. Before she was removed from life support that day at 6:26 p.m., doctors reported that she had not shown any brain activity at either time.
