Dangerous Flooding Prompts Multiple Water Rescues Across NJ

First responders carried out multiple water rescues across New Jersey on Saturday after flash flooding inundated roads and stranded vehicles.

The National Weather Service had warned that heavy rain could trigger flash flooding, and those forecasts were realized as downpours swept across the state.

The storms also caused widespread power outages, leaving more than 5,000 homes and businesses without electricity. Of those, more than 4,800 were Jersey Central Power & Light customers, according to the utility's outage map.

Heavy rain fell at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour Saturday, while intense lightning accompanied the storms, sparking at least one fire and knocking the National Weather Service's radar in Mount Holly offline.

The weather service said the KDIX radar system was struck directly by lightning and is expected to remain out of service until at least Sunday.
