On Monday, firefighters in the Snug Harbor community of Toms River saved a doe who had found herself swimming in a lagoon.

Residents reportedly spotted the deer swimming in despair and unable to return to the land, according to a witness. Her return to the neighborhood beach, where there is a natural beachfront, was unsuccessfully attempted by a number of locals, according to the witness.

According to Joe Catapano, the fire chief for East Dover, the authorities received a call at 4:30 p.m. reporting a deer stuck in a lagoon near Ship Court. Volunteer fire company crews from East Dover and Silverton responded with their fire trucks and marine units to offer assistance on land.

Mark Faller, a resident of Seaman Court, came over and lassoed the deer, a witness said.

Catapano said firefighters then guided the deer back to land near Cattus Island, where the doe was able to get out of the water safely on her own.

Authorities do not advise the general public to attempt these rescue operations on their own, according to Catapano.

Despite a deer's friendly appearance, he warned that close contact with distressed wildlife could cause catastrophic harm to both the animal and the rescuer.

A deer has previously been rescued from a lagoon in the East Dover neighborhood of Toms River. In a video that received more than a million views in 2021, a guy dove into a lagoon in Windsor Park to save a deer.
