Double Tragedy: Driver Hits Pedestrian, Dies in Second Car Collision in NJ
After getting out of his car to check on a woman he had just hit, a driver in Somerset County was struck by a car on Thursday night, killing him, according to the police.
According to a press statement from the
North Plainfield Police Department,
Danti Bryant, 57, of Plainfield, struck a 31-year-old borough woman while driving on Route 22 in North Plainfield close to the Costco around 11:30 p.m.
The driver of another vehicle heading east on the highway swerved to avoid the pedestrian who had been injured, striking Bryant as he stepped out of his car to investigate what he had hit, according to the department.
North Plainfield Police Chief William Parenti stated in a statement that "he reportedly swerved to avoid the pedestrian in the roadway and did not see the second pedestrian exiting his vehicle until after he struck him."
Bryant was transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick along with the woman who had been hit originally. There, authorities said, he passed away from his wounds. The woman's injuries were not too serious.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the department's traffic safety unit at
908-769-2931. The crashes are now being investigated.
