Downtown Dance Academy was founded on the principle that children's needs come first. The entire staff is dedicated to making every child feel – and be – safe, secure, comfortable, and cared-for in an educational and entertaining atmosphere. Being a good dancer and a good teacher are two different things, and your child requires both! There are few hobbies that can compare to dancing. Fitness, self-esteem, the joy of movement, and a lifelong passion for dance are all benefits of dancing. For almost a decade, Downtown Dance Academy has offered dance classes to both children and adults in Ocean County.

A Variety of Dance Styles to Choose From

  • Jazz - This class focuses on jazz and great music. Class format consists of a warm-up to enhance core strengthening, balance, and extensions through isolations, rhythmic exercises, and floor stretches. Students study jazz technique, and learn to build complex combinations and routines. Class includes across the floor patterns, short dance routines and show dances.

  • Lyrical - These classes will focus on warm ups that improve flexibility, extension, core strength, and balance. Center work will include both lyrical and contemporary steps and combinations. Combinations will incorporate the technical elements of ballet with jazz and modern movements. Students will learn how to express a wide range of emotions through their dance based on musical interpretation. Contemporary combinations will consist of abstract movements that combine modern and classical ballet elements. Students will learn how to quickly change tempo and create sharp and clean transitions. This class also accepts adult students who are looking for a higher level challenge.

  • Ballet & Pointe - The focus of this class is to create good technical habits while building strength, flexibility, and body coordination. As dancers advance, they start to establish a strong technical foundation and begin to explore more advanced movement and concepts. Proper technique is taught through a full ballet class, but emphasis is also placed on musicality, projection and performance quality, and artistic expression. Dancers may begin pointe class with the permission of the instructor

  • Pointe – This class is intended for those dancers who have shown adequate physical strength, accurate technique, and necessary mental awareness to go en pointe. Dancers must be recommended for pointe by their instructor. Students will utilize previously learned ballet technique while working in pointe shoes. This class focuses on foot/ankle strengthening exercises. Students will learn and practice pointe at the barre and center with heavy emphasis on correct foot and body alignment.

  • Hip-Hop - This is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements.

  • Acro - Learn the basics or work on advancing your skills in this flexible Acro class! Acro is not the typical tumbling or gymnastics class. Our experienced acro instructor will guide the class towards increased flexibility, balance, strength, muscle control, discipline and concentration. This class will focus on fundamental acrobatic technique, teaching such skills as handstands, chin stands, elbow stands, cartwheels, back bends, walkovers, balance and contortion tricks, all each student’s individual level of experience. And it’s fun, too!

  • Tap - This fun class is designed to introduce students to tap dance. Learning some basic tap skills will allow the students to experience each style of dance while improving their flexibility, sense of rhythm and overall coordination. As dancers progress, they will learn to think quickly on their feet while developing personal creative expression and musicality.
